Kids.gov can help children understand government

March 18, 2009 - Art Smith
Looking for some Web sites that can help your children understand government and history a little bit better?

Look no further than Kids.gov.

The federally funded web site is a clearinghouse for a number of kid friendly sites sponsored by the government.

The site is broken into sections for young kids, grades K-5, and for the slightly older grades 6-8 group. There is also a section for educators, which of course, could also be used by parents in search of activities for their children.

The site is easy to use, clicking on the link for K-5 for instance, will display subject-based links for math, sciences, careers, computers and more. Clicking on the Computers link will give you a list child-safe government sites that offer information on things such as the birth of the internet and how to stay safe while using social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace.

Each month the Kids.gov features a site of the month. This month’s feature is on the youth site for the U.S. House of Representatives, which allow children to learn about congress, take a virtual filed trip, play games and download an activity booklet.
