Teacher Limits Bathroom Breaks

January 23, 2012 - Amy Phelps
The Internet has been abuzz about a New York teacher who limited her 5th-grade class to 3 bathroom passes A WEEK. Kids were given three "vouchers" that they could redeem at particular times during the day. If they didn't use all of their vouchers, they could turn them in at the end of the week for a prize. They were told otherwise to use the bathroom at lunch/recess.

I was surprised by the article itself, but also surprised that a lot of the commenters' reactions were, "Well, they're in 5th-grade, they can hold it." Some commenters were saying the students could go in breaks in-between classes, but considering how it was worded to use the passes during certain times of the day, I don't think this was a class that changed for subjects, but more the elementary school style one teacher a day except for specials. And as someone who went to a school where your locker could be on the first floor, your class could be on the third floor and your next class could be in an adjacent building and there were about 300 students all wading through the halls at the same time, 5 minutes did not cover all of that and a visit to the restroom.

I wonder how those adults would feel if they were told they couldn't use the bathroom for their entire shift at work. "Just go at lunch," their boss would say. I wonder how quick a complaint would be filed.
